Statue of Monk Jyuoh-do Mokujiki Buddha

Monk Mokujiki (1718~1810) made a vow to travel around Japan when he was fifty-five years old. And he carved thousands of wood for about 30 years until he died at the age of ninety three, in year 7 of Bunka period. He visited Echigo twice. During his second visit, (from 2nd year Kyouwa period to 2nd year Bunka period), he left many excellent works behind. We can say that the Buddhist image of Jyuoh-do is the most important work of him.

From the inscription on the back, we can tell that he carved twelve Buddhist images in three months; from November 9th in the first year of the Bunka period (1804) to February 11th of the next year. The Monk enjoyed his eighty eight years old birthday during his stay in Biwajima, and he left the famous wood carving ‘Hachiboku no zu’ and he used this to show his celebration of a long life. A self-portrait was distributed to related people. The Buddhist statue image of Mokujiki, or the ‘smiling Buddhist‘, appeared around this time. Also the Seated figure of Monk Binzuru made by Monk Mokujiki is a typical example of those. The Shouzuka hag hanka-seated statue has an unusual angry expression that is said to be the only angry Mokujiki expression.Additionally Enma, the great king, and his whole family; nine Jyuouson, are featured. All twelve of the statues are made by of ginkgo wood.
